Familiar Stranger Week 5 - Everyone Gets To Listen

Discovery Bible Study: 1 Corinthians 14:1–3

Read 1 Corinthians 14:1–3 and answer the Discovery Bible Study Questions:

  • What do we learn about God the Spirit from this passage?
  • What do we learn about people from this passage?
  • What do you sense God saying to you from this passage?
  • What do you sense God asking you to do in response?
  • How would this be good news to someone in your life?

Discussion Questions:

  • Have you ever had someone give you a prophetic word? What was your response? How did it make you feel?
  • Have you ever felt like the Lord gave you a word to share with someone else? Did you do it? Why or why not?
  • What might be an ordinary way God speaks to you that you would recognize? (pictures, words, symbols, etc.)

Group Practice:

Lean into prophetic listening...

  • Go around the group having everyone share a situation that they are longing to hear from God about.
  • Have the leader pick one of those people/issues to practice listening for.
  • Because prophecy is for encouragement take a minute or two for everyone to listen to Holy Spirit for a word of Good News from Jesus for this person. (It can be a picture, a Scripture, sensation, a song lyric, an impression, etc.)
  • Have everyone share what they feel Holy Spirit may have given them for the person and then pray over them all together.

Practices:

Mild: Sip Prayer

Every time you drink, pray:

“Lord, how may I be an encouragement to others today?”

Medium: Listen for Myself

In your quiet time, ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you or reveal something to you in a way you might recognize (a word, picture, or symbol). Write down whatever comes to mind. If you’re still unsure, ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand or clarify it. Note whether or not there is greater clarification or understanding.

Find a trusted friend and share your experience with them. They might help you discern what was shared or revealed.

Hot: Listen for Others to Share

Just like last week:

In your time alone with God, ask the Holy Spirit to give you an opportunity to have a spiritual conversation with someone that day.

Ask the Lord to bring something tangible to mind that would indicate someone He is highlighting for you to talk to—whether it’s someone you already know or someone you’ll be meeting.

As you’re listening, pay attention to what God brings to mind—maybe a description, a color, a picture of an item, or a person. Don’t dismiss the very first thought that comes to mind. Write it down, and then stay alert throughout the day for the item or person that God placed on your heart.

Once you come across them, look for an opportunity to engage in conversation. See where it goes. Don’t force anything—just ask the Holy Spirit to guide your words and bring to mind anything He wants you to share.

Tell a friend or your group how the experience went!

Personal Response: "This week I will..."
