Intentionally Craft a Rule of Life.
A "Rule of Life" or Predictable Practices is less about rules and more about cooperating with the Holy Spirit through participating in practices that Jesus did. These practices are life-giving ways in which we connect with God and put ourselves in God's hands to be shaped by Him.
We are highlighting a number of practices, but the list is not exhaustive. These are placed in four buckets: prayer, rest, relationships, and work/activity.
PRAYER: We become a community of communion with God in a culture of distraction and escapism through various practices of prayer.
- Scripture
- Solitude
- Fasting
- Prayer (communication and communing with God)
- Listen to Worship Music
REST: We become a community of rest in a culture of hurry and exhaustion through restful practices.
- Sabbath
- Good Sleep
- Set Aside Digital Devices
- Go on a Nature Stroll
- Go on a Retreat
RELATIONSHIPS: We become a community of love and depth in a culture of individualism and superficiality through relational practices.
- Community
- Enjoying Meals with Others
- Gather to Worship God
- Participate in a Group
- Throw Parties
ACTIVITY/WORK: We become a good news community of justice, hospitality, and contentment in a culture of division, discontentment, and hostility through practices of work/activity.
- Witness
- Generosity
- Service
- Not So Random Acts of Kindness
- Simplify Life & Give Stuff Away
What would it look like to begin to put a practice from each bucket in your schedule? Is something a daily practice? Weekly? Monthly? Yearly?
What could you stop doing that may not be helpful or may be taking time from something better?
